Kate Middleton shared her emotional journey after being diagnosed with cancer and undergoing chemotherapy. The Princess of Wales, 42, made a candid remark about her health struggle at the fourth annual “Together at Christmas” service on December 6, held at Westminster Abbey in London. This marked her second public appearance of the week, as she gradually resumes her royal duties following her treatment that commenced in February.
When questioned by performer Paloma Faith about her health, Middleton responded honestly. “I didn’t anticipate this year to be the one I’ve just experienced,” she said, according to a video of the conversation shared by Channel 5 News in the U.K. Faith responded with “The unplanned,” to which the princess concurred, nodding her head and repeating, “The unplanned, exactly. But I think many people this year have faced such challenging times.”
The Christmas Carol Service this year incorporated themes of love and empathy, selected by the princess following her “incredibly tough” revelation in March that she was undergoing cancer treatment. Last month, her husband, Prince William, commented on the family’s “brutal” 2024, stating it was “probably the hardest year in my life” after both his wife and father, King Charles III, battled cancer.
In September, Middleton announced she was cancer-free. “I cannot express the relief of finally completing my chemotherapy treatment,” she wrote in a heartfelt statement on X. “Staying cancer-free is now my priority. Although I have finished chemotherapy, my path to full recovery is long, and I must take each day as it comes.”
Middleton appeared radiant and healthy at the Christmas Carol Service alongside her family, including their three children: sons Prince George, 11, and Prince Louis, 6, and daughter Princess Charlotte, 9. The Prince and Princess of Wales accompanied their children to the renowned Kindness Tree, where guests dedicated a decoration to someone who has been a source of support in their lives. Prince Louis was seen holding his decoration, which turned out to be a handwritten note expressing gratitude for his grandparents. “Thank you for Granny and Grandpa because they have played games with me,” his message read. Louis then placed his decoration on the tree.
While Middleton has been cancer-free for about three months, King Charles is still undergoing treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer. Both Charles and Queen Camilla were absent from the Christmas Carol Service. There was no official statement regarding their absence; however, Camilla is still recuperating from a recent bout of pneumonia.
