Kate Middleton has been shortlisted for Time’s “Person of the Year.” The Princess of Wales, 42, has been recognized for initiating a crucial discussion about privacy and health for public figures. Other notable names on the shortlist include President-elect Donald Trump, Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Vice President Kamala Harris, Benjamin Netanyahu, Jerome Powell, Claudia Sheinbaum, Joe Rogan, and Yulia Navalnaya, the widow of the late Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny. The prestigious award is given to an individual, group, or movement that significantly impacts the world, regardless of whether the impact is positive or negative. The 2024 shortlist was revealed on the “Today” show on Monday, with the winner to be announced on Thursday. This year’s recipient will follow in the footsteps of singer Taylor Swift, who was named Time’s “Person of the Year” in 2023.

Princess Catherine has largely remained out of the public eye this year following her abdominal surgery in January. The surgery was followed by a cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatment, after which she announced she was cancer-free. After revealing her cancer diagnosis in March, the princess focused on her treatment, staying away from public engagements. In a letter three months later, she mentioned that she was “making good progress” but acknowledged having “good days and bad days” during chemotherapy. Recently, she has resumed some public duties, most notably attending the annual Christmas carol service, “Together at Christmas,” at London’s Westminster Abbey on Friday.

During the festive concert, which she personally planned, Middleton reflected on the challenging year she faced. “I didn’t know this year was going to be the year that I’ve just had,” she told singer Paloma Faith. “The unplanned. But, I think lots of people this year have had such challenging times.” This year’s Christmas carol service included themes of love and empathy, chosen by the princess after her “incredibly tough” health struggle. Last month, William commented on the “brutal” year his family had endured following his wife and father’s respective cancer battles. “Trying to get through everything else and keep everything on track has been really difficult,” William said, describing 2024 as “the hardest year of my life.” “But I’m so proud of my wife, I’m proud of my father, for handling the things that they have done. But from a personal family point of view, it’s been, yeah, it’s been brutal,” he added.
