Katy Perry has revealed that her upcoming single, Lifetimes, is set to launch on August 9. In addition to the single, Perry will unveil a music video that is anticipated to visually represent her newest artistic concept, as reported by Deadline. The pop icon announced this news by posting the cover art for Lifetimes, which showcases Perry clutching a futuristic heart.
Lifetimes comes after Perry's last single, Woman's World, which was the first track from her anticipated sixth studio album, 143. Despite a promising beginning, Woman's World faced a challenging start, debuting at No. 63 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 65 on the Global 200. The Hollywood Reporter noted that the song's reception was significantly impacted by the involvement of Dr. Luke, Perry's past collaborator, who has been accused of sexual misconduct by his former artist, Kesha.
The music video for Woman's World, which was meant to be a satirical commentary on female empowerment, received criticism for being overly direct. Perry responded to the backlash, explaining, "We're having fun, being sarcastic with it, it's very slapstick and very on the nose, it's like a reset for me and for my idea of the feminine divine."
Moving forward, Perry has not yet revealed the complete tracklist for 143, but she has provided some teasers during live-stream sessions on Instagram and TikTok. She has hinted at songs like I'm His He's Mine featuring Doechii, Gimme Gimme featuring 21 Savage, and Nirvana. It has been almost four years since Perry released her last album, Smile, in August 2020. That project, which included singles such as Daisies and the title track, was considered her least successful album in years, debuting at No. 5 on the Billboard 200, according to Deadline.
