King Charles III recently shared a deeply personal moment, revealing that a new documentary about his wife, Queen Camilla, brought him to tears. During a Buckingham Palace reception held before the premiere of 'Gladiator II,' the monarch disclosed that it was the documentary 'Her Majesty the Queen: Behind Closed Doors' that had moved him so profoundly. Charles, who celebrated his 76th birthday on Thursday, discussed the 90-minute film, which focuses on Queen Camilla's efforts to raise awareness about domestic and sexual violence, with guests at the event hosted by the Film and TV Charity.
'It's very moving, isn't it? I think BAFTA [British Academy of Film and Television Arts] are interested in it,' Charles told actor Damian Lewis, who had seen the documentary, according to The Telegraph. The King also spoke with the documentary's director, Kerene Barefield, and producer, Naveed Chowdhary-Flatt, admitting that he was 'moved to tears' after watching a preview of the film while in Scotland. 'I am very proud of it,' the King said of the documentary, which aired on ITV1 on Monday. 'It reduced me to tears.'
At the reception, Charles engaged in lighter conversations about other TV and film projects. He joked with Lewis, who stars as King Henry VIII in the BBC series 'Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light,' saying, 'At least you can claim not to be related to him.' Unfortunately for Lewis, Charles is distantly related to Henry VIII through his sister, Margaret Tudor. The King also chatted with actor Joseph Fiennes, asking for recommendations on what to watch next. Fiennes suggested some box sets, to which the King responded, 'The trouble is, there are some good ones and some not so good ones.'
The Buckingham Palace reception was held in anticipation of the star-studded 'Gladiator II' premiere in London's Leicester Square. While Queen Camilla was present at the TV and Film charity gathering to greet guests, she did not attend the premiere due to her ongoing recovery from a recent chest infection. The Queen had also missed Remembrance Day events the previous weekend. At the reception, she told guests that she felt 'absolutely rotten' last week but is now 'on the mend.' She resumed her royal duties on Tuesday, meeting with nominees for this year's Booker Prize.
