New Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany lauded his team's mentality following their 3-2 comeback victory against Wolfsburg on Sunday. In his debut Bundesliga match as Bayern's coach, Kompany saw his team lead 1-0 at halftime but fall behind 2-1 in the second half before seizing control of the game.
Kompany expressed his enjoyment of his first Bundesliga game as a coach to broadcaster DAZN, attributing the win to Bayern's mental strength. "We dominated the first half without conceding any chances. The beginning of the second half was poor," he said. "We conceded twice, but ultimately the mentality was strong, which is why we won."
Kompany, who has extensive playing experience, acknowledged that such games could end in defeat or a draw, but the victory demonstrated the team's mental fortitude despite imperfections. In post-match interviews, he praised Bayern's "outstanding mentality," emphasizing that "mistakes are part of the game, but it's about how you respond to them."
Bayern's success was also significantly aided by England captain Harry Kane, who was involved in all three of Bayern's goals. Kane provided a crucial assist for Jamal Musiala's opening goal, his header led to an own goal by Wolfsburg, and he delivered a precise pass for Serge Gnabry's winning goal in the 82nd minute.
Kane acknowledged to Bayern TV that the performance was not flawless, noting that the team was still adapting to the coach's strategies. He expressed optimism about the upcoming week, which would allow the team to focus on implementing the coach's ideas. Bayern's next match is at home against Freiburg on Sunday.
