RIYADH: The largest-ever gathering of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification has commenced in Riyadh, with enhancing global drought resilience being one of the primary objectives.

From Dec. 2 to 13, the initial days of COP16 are scheduled to feature several high-profile summits, ministerial discussions, and announcements aimed at tackling the urgent issues related to land degradation, degradation, and drought.

Among the expected attendees are French President Emmanuel Macron and World Bank President Ajay Banga.

On the opening day, Saudi Arabia, as the event's host, will launch the Riyadh Global Drought Resilience Initiative to expedite international efforts in this area.

Simultaneously, the Saudi Green Initiative Forum, taking place from Dec. 2 to 3, will bring together hundreds of policymakers, business leaders, and experts from around the world in a dedicated pavilion within the COP16 Green Zone.

Additionally, the Second International Forum on Greening Technologies will be held in the Green Zone from Dec 6-8, featuring numerous specialized sessions to explore solutions, innovations, and lessons learned from global greening projects, alongside showcasing scientific research related to restoration projects worldwide.
