Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati announced on Saturday the cancellation of his trip to the United Nations General Assembly, condemning 'horrific massacres' following deadly attacks in Lebanon attributed to Israel.
Mikati stated in a release that he called off his journey 'due to the developments related to the Israeli aggression on Lebanon', after this week witnessed an Israeli strike on the southern suburbs of Beirut and attacks on Hezbollah devices blamed on Israel.
It is noteworthy that on Tuesday, exploding pagers injured hundreds of Hezbollah members across Lebanon, according to a source close to AFP. This incident marked the first of its kind since Hezbollah began engaging in near-daily exchanges of fire with Israel in support of its ally Hamas, following the Palestinian militant group's October 7 attack on Israel, which sparked the Gaza war.
A strike on Hezbollah's stronghold in Lebanon's capital Beirut on Friday resulted in the deaths of eight individuals and injured dozens more, with a source close to the movement confirming the death of a top military leader. The Israeli military claimed it conducted a 'targeted strike', while the Lebanese health ministry reported that the attack killed eight people and wounded 59 others.
On Friday, Israel declared it had intensified its attacks on Lebanon's Hezbollah, just hours after the group's leader vowed retaliation for deadly explosions that targeted its communication devices, resulting in 37 deaths and thousands of injuries. Meanwhile, Israeli public broadcaster Kan reported on Friday that approximately 150 rockets were fired from Lebanon across the border.
