Thursdays in the Formula One calendar can feel somewhat subdued — teams fine-tuning their cars for Friday's practice sessions, gearing up for Saturday's qualifying rounds, and the main event on Sunday. Drivers make their way to the media zone, discussing their upcoming race and reflecting on the season. With no on-track action, no thrills, and certainly no F1 cars zipping around the Yas Marina Circuit, it might seem like a quiet day. Yet, fans flocked to Yas Mall on Thursday, eager to board shuttle buses to the circuit, drawn by the electric atmosphere at the iconic venue. For 16 years, the Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix has not only showcased top-tier racing but also significantly boosted the nation's tourism and economy. Official figures reveal that 65% of the 170,000 spectators at Yas Marina last year were tourists. As we awaited security clearance to enter the media center, some fans outside the gates were visibly anxious, seeking tickets. Their eagerness was undiminished by the fact that Red Bull's Max Verstappen had already secured the driver's championship, marking his fourth consecutive title. For these enthusiasts, the allure of attending a Formula One race at Yas Marina is simply irresistible. Saif Rashid Al-Noaimi, CEO of Ethara, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix organizers, shared insights into how this race continues to captivate fans globally, contributing substantially to the country's economy. “We've witnessed unprecedented demand this year. Last year, with 170,000 attendees over the weekend and nearly 70% of spectators from outside the UAE, was our record year,” Al-Noaimi told the Khaleej Times. “The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has solidified its role as a cornerstone of Abu Dhabi's tourism strategy and economic growth. Last year, visitors who attended the Grand Prix spent over one billion dirhams, significantly bolstering the local economy.” The Gulf region now hosts four F1 races, but the Abu Dhabi GP remains the most sought-after. Al-Noaimi attributes the race's enduring popularity to the organizers' commitment to continuous improvement. “We consistently strive to enhance the Grand Prix experience. This year, we've introduced upgrades and new offerings for 2024,” he said. “Our paddock club has new entrances, a refurbished rooftop and terrace, and a stunning 360-degree viewing platform. Additionally, we've expanded fan zones with new products and viewing platforms around Yas Marina Circuit. We're thrilled to present the 16th edition of the Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, set to be our largest yet.” Another major draw for fans is the post-race concerts at Yas Marina. This weekend's lineup features American superstar Eminem, who will entertain fans on Saturday. “The after-race concerts are a vital component, always aimed at delivering exceptional value for our guests,” Al-Noaimi noted. “With four nights of top-tier artists, there's plenty to enjoy for fans.”
