Leigh Whannell's Wolf Man boasts a compelling tagline: "What if someone you loved became something else?" Following his successful reimagining of Universal's The Invisible Man in 2020, which featured Elizabeth Moss and delved into themes of gaslighting, Whannell is now turning his attention to the studio's 1941 werewolf classic. This time, he explores toxic masculinity and family disintegration through the lens of a clawed parable, starring Christopher Abbott and Julia Garner.
The new trailer sets the stage for a folk-inflected horror film, infused with body horror elements. The setting shifts from Wales to Oregon, and instead of wolf-headed walking sticks, we witness a more visceral werewolf encounter. The film promises "straight-up, pure horror," with tightly coiled tension and paranoia.
The official synopsis reveals that Christopher Abbott plays Blake, a San Francisco husband and father who inherits his childhood home in rural Oregon after his father's disappearance. As his marriage to Charlotte (Garner) strains, Blake convinces her to visit the property with their daughter, Ginger. Upon arrival, they are attacked by an unseen creature and barricade themselves inside the house. As the night progresses, Blake's behavior becomes increasingly strange, hinting at a terrifying transformation. Charlotte must decide whether the threat within their home is more dangerous than the one outside.
Anticipation is high, and fans will be howling at the moon until Wolf Man hits UK cinemas on 17 January, 2025.
