In a surprising move, Hyundai has introduced a limited-run special edition of the electric Kona in Japan, aptly named the 'Mauna Loa' after the world's largest active volcano. This unique model is dressed in Mirage Green and features a rugged transformation with Toyo Open Country all-terrain tires. The tires, measuring 205/65 R16, are paired with matte black wheels from Weds, giving the small crossover a pseudo-offroad appearance. Hyundai has opted for smaller wheels compared to the standard 17-inch set with 215/60 R17 tires, possibly to mimic the look of bedlock wheels found on true off-road vehicles.

The Mauna Loa's bumpers and side skirts evoke a retro vibe reminiscent of 1990s base models, though they are finished with scratch-resistant paint to enhance durability. Hyundai describes this finish as a 'unique uneven surface' with a textured look that offers a 'subdued shine.' Additional exterior enhancements include mudguards, black weatherstripping, dark badges, and standard roof bars for added practicality.

Inside, the Mauna Loa continues the green theme with neon yellow accents for contrast. Hyundai has equipped the interior with easy-to-clean floor mats and a rubber cargo mat. Despite its outdoor-oriented design, the seats are upholstered in leather, which might not be as practical as cloth for durability and ease of cleaning. Additional accessories include a folding chair and storage pockets that can be attached to the back of the front seats, along with two differently sized cargo boxes.

Hyundai is producing only 30 units of the Kona Mauna Loa, priced at 4.95 million yen, which translates to approximately $32,500. This makes it around $2,800 more expensive than the base electric Kona Voyage. The Mauna Loa is equipped with a larger 64.8-kWh battery pack, providing a range of 336 miles (541 kilometers).
