London will be the first among the four major fashion weeks to prohibit brands featuring exotic animal skins, according to the British Fashion Council, which announced this on Friday.
"We will not feature any brands that include real fur or exotic skins in their collections, and we require designers to adhere to these conditions as part of their application to participate in London Fashion Week," the council stated.
London Fashion Week has been fur-free since 2018, but until now, designers have had the liberty to use skins from animals like snakes, crocodiles, and alligators in their collections.
It remains uncertain whether the other major fashion weeks—Paris, New York, and Milan—will adopt similar measures. The council also mentioned that the next issue on their agenda is the use of feathers.
They are "actively consulting with designers and the broader fashion community to explore our stance on feathers in catwalk shows." Copenhagen Fashion Week previously announced that it would ban feathers from its events starting next year, with ostrich feathers being the most commonly used.
Copenhagen has already implemented a ban on exotic skins.
