Residents and tourists frequently leave behind valuable items such as phones, laptops, and even substantial amounts of cash in taxis. Despite the extensive network of taxis operated by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), the authority manages to recover and return a significant number of lost items. Reporting a lost item in a taxi is straightforward and can be accomplished through various methods.
You can simply call the helpline at 800 9090, providing details about the lost item and the taxi, including the license plate number, pick-up, and drop-off times. Alternatively, you can file a report via the app, website, or by visiting an RTA station. Taxi drivers who return lost items are sometimes offered a generous tip, which they often decline. However, since 2023, drivers are required to receive the fare for a ride when returning a lost item.
After reporting a lost item to the RTA, the authority will locate the cab and provide you with the driver's phone number to coordinate the return. When you contact the driver and request the return of the item, they will start the meter from their current location. Upon reaching your location, the driver will stop the meter and request payment for the fare. An RTA customer service agent confirmed to Khaleej Times that customers are indeed required to pay for the cab fare, unless they choose to pick up the item themselves.
The RTA frequently recognizes taxi drivers who return highly valuable items and large sums of money, acknowledging their efforts. In October 2024, Dubai Police honored an Egyptian taxi driver for returning items worth Dh1 million found in his car. Brigadier Majid Al Suwaidi, Director of Al Barsha Police Station, awarded Hamada Abu Zeid, who works for the Dubai Taxi Corporation, a certificate of appreciation, highlighting the importance of community collaboration in enhancing security and promoting positive values in society.
