KEVIN! Macaulay Culkin, who famously portrayed the endearing troublemaker Kevin in the iconic Christmas film “Home Alone,” has revealed that his three-year-old son, Dakota, believes he is the character his father played. Culkin, now 44, and his fiancée Brenda Song, 36, are parents to two sons, Dakota, 3, and a 2-year-old whose name remains undisclosed. The “Home Alone” star recently shared with E! News that his boys are such avid fans of the movie that Dakota has begun to conflate his own memories with events from the film.
“He thinks he’s Kevin,” Culkin told the outlet. “I’m like, ‘Do you remember going down the stairs on the sled?’ He’s like, ‘Mmhmm, yep. Sure do.’ I’m like, ‘Do you remember when he had yellow hair?’ And he’s like, ‘Uh-huh, yep.'” Dakota even believes he fought the movie’s villains, Marv and Harry, who tried to break into the McCallister family home. When Dakota claimed he “fought the burglars,” Culkin playfully corrected him, saying, “‘You’re a lying liar who lies. That was me!’”
Despite his children’s enthusiasm for the film, Culkin admits they struggle to follow the plot. “They can’t really follow the storyline so I kind of told them the story as it goes,” he shared. The “American Horror Story” star also joked about the physical differences between himself then and now, noting, “I’m a lot taller now. I have a lot more body hair.”
Meanwhile, Culkin’s nephew and niece have yet to watch “Home Alone.” Macaulay’s brother, Kieran, 42, who also stars in the film, thinks it might be too “scary” for his daughter Kinsey, 5, and son Wilder, 3. “There’s still some scary parts,” Kieran said recently. “For the 3-year-old, there’s the tarantula [and] there’s the guy at the end who said, ‘I’m gonna bite off all your fingers.’ That’s scary for a 3-year-old.” However, Kieran hinted that this Christmas might be the time to introduce the holiday classic to his kids. “We think they might be ready for ‘Home Alone’ this year,” he revealed. “If not, next year.”
Despite any past reservations, Macaulay is now fully embracing the beloved seasonal movie. “I’m kind of embracing it and, at the same time, taking the piss out of it, too,” he told E! this week. “It’s very rare when you have something that kind of encompasses an important day, and I’m a part of that. It’s more fun to embrace it than to fight it.”
