Actor R Madhavan, who is attending the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa for the premiere of his film 'Hisaab Barabar', recently discussed his iconic movie 'Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein', which was re-released in August to celebrate its 25th anniversary. Produced by Vashu Bhagnani's Pooja Entertainment, the film also featured Dia Mirza and Saif Ali Khan. This project marked the Bollywood debuts of both Madhavan and Dia.
Speaking with ANI, Madhavan revealed his initial disappointment when the movie flopped upon its first release but expressed his joy at its eventual recognition as a classic. He also noted with satisfaction that the re-release after 25 years earned more than the original run. 'When it first came out, it didn't perform well; it flopped. I was heartbroken. I had visited all the temples and done everything possible to ensure the film was made as intended, but it was still disheartening. Little did I know that destiny had a grand plan for me. It re-released after 25 years and made more money than it did initially. It's wonderful to be acknowledged for a film 25 years later,' Madhavan shared.
'Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein' was originally released in 2001. The romantic drama, directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon, was a remake of his own Tamil film 'Minnale', also released in the same year. A few years ago, there were rumors online about a planned sequel, which Madhavan denied in 2020. Songs from the film, such as 'Sach Keh Raha Hai', 'Dil Ko Tumse', and 'Zara Zara', remain popular with audiences today.
Madhavan also shared an intriguing observation about his films, noting that those featuring romance on trains have performed exceptionally well. 'Whenever I have done romance on the train, the films have done really well. 'Alai Payuthey', my first film with Mani Ratnam, the original of 'Saathiya', and then 'Tanu Weds Manu'--wherever we had trains, the film has done well for us,' he said.
Meanwhile, IFFI 2024, which commenced on November 20, is showcasing over 180 international films from 81 countries, including 16 world premieres, 3 international premieres, 43 Asian premieres, and 109 Indian premieres. Notably, the organizers have included a tribute program to honor the 100th birth anniversaries of four Indian cinema legends: actor-filmmaker Raj Kapoor, director Tapan Sinha, Telugu cinema star Akkineni Nageswara Rao (ANR), and singer Mohammed Rafi.
The 55th edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) will continue until November 28.
