A man has been arrested in connection with a burglary at the County Durham home of England cricket captain Ben Stokes. Stokes reported that his wife and two children were present during the break-in, during which his OBE medal and other valuables were stolen.
Durham police confirmed that a 32-year-old man from North Yorkshire was arrested on suspicion of burglary on Thursday night. The suspect has been released on bail as investigations continue.
Stokes, who was in Pakistan for a test match at the time of the burglary, revealed that among the stolen items was the medal he received in the 2020 New Year’s honours list for his role in helping England win the World Cup the previous year. He described the break-in at his Castle Eden home on the evening of 17 October, sharing images of the stolen items on social media.
The stolen items included a Christian Dior handbag, a gold ring with England cricket insignia, and bracelets. Stokes emphasized that the worst aspect of the crime was that it occurred while his wife and children were in the house. Fortunately, none of his family members were physically harmed, but the emotional and mental impact on them has been significant.
Stokes added, “They escaped with jewellery, other valuables, and a good deal of personal items. Many of those items have real sentimental value for me and my family. They are irreplaceable. Although we have lost cherished possessions, my primary motivation in sharing these photographs is not the recovery of material items. It is to catch the people who did this.”
