Manchester City have named former Sweden midfielder Therese Sjögran as their new women’s director of football. The 47-year-old takes over from Nils Nielsen, the former Denmark and Switzerland head coach, who departed in June.
Sjögran will oversee recruitment across the women’s and girls’ pathway, as well as coach and player development, according to the club. She is set to start her role on 1 December and will report to the managing director, Charlotte O’Neill.
Since retiring from playing in 2015, Sjögran has served as sporting director at Rosengård, where she previously played when the Swedish club was known as Malmö FF Dam. During her playing career, she earned an impressive 214 caps and helped Sweden reach the finals of the 2003 Women’s World Cup and the 2001 European Championship.
“She is an undeniable icon in the sport and has significantly impacted both on and off the field in her roles as a player and director over the past two decades,” O’Neill stated on City’s website. “We have a strong team working behind the scenes to help the club compete for top honours, and Therese is a valuable addition to that group.”
Sjögran joins City at the top of the WSL, leading by a point after five matches, although second-placed Chelsea, the reigning champions, have a game in hand. Gareth Taylor’s squad has made a strong start in the Women’s Champions League, securing a notable win over defending champions Barcelona.
