Manchester United kicked off their Women’s Super League season in impressive fashion, with England midfielder Grace Clinton making a memorable debut for the club by scoring a goal and delivering an outstanding performance against West Ham.
Clinton, who joined Manchester United in 2022 but spent the previous season on loan at Tottenham following a stint at Bristol City in the 2022-23 campaign, showcased her prowess in the midfield and appeared completely comfortable in the heart of the team. Her delicate second-half header, expertly set up by Lisa Naalsund’s cross, made it 3-0, following earlier first-half goals from Brazil forward Geyse—whose shot West Ham believed was preceded by a foul on Camila Sáez—and left-back Leah Galton, who skillfully cut inside onto her right foot before drilling in the second. Geyse, brimming with confidence, also struck the crossbar with a spectacular overhead effort in the first half.
The performance was a positive sign for both the supporters and head coach Marc Skinner, especially after a summer of significant change with the departures of key players including England internationals Mary Earps, Katie Zelem, and Nikita Parris, the team’s top scorer last season. However, there have been notable arrivals as well, such as Norway striker Elisabeth Terland, who started the game, Sweden full-back Anna Sandberg, who missed out due to a minor injury, and Canada midfielder Simi Awujo, who made her debut as a second-half substitute. Netherlands international Dominique Janssen also made a strong debut in the holding midfield role.
While this result is encouraging, it would be wise not to get too carried away, especially considering West Ham’s disappointing display and lack of real goal threat until late in the game, when Riko Ueki’s shot from inside the area went just over the bar. Predictions have suggested that West Ham could be involved in a relegation battle this season, and Saturday’s match provided little evidence to contradict that forecast.
