Martha Stewart's comment that Ryan Reynolds is "not so funny" caught the actor off guard, especially since he claims to have only met her once or twice. Stewart, 83, admitted that while Reynolds, 48, is a "good" and "funny" actor, his real-life demeanor is "very serious." She seemed to suggest she knew this well, considering they are neighbors. However, sources say otherwise.
A source informed TMZ that the "Deadpool & Wolverine" actor doesn't know Stewart well, alleging they've only met twice at most. The outlet claimed that Reynolds and the Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia founder had brief conversations at one or two parties over the years, with the insider noting that their interactions were too short to truly understand each other's personalities.
Blake Lively's husband has been candid about his struggle with anxiety; as the source mentioned, Reynolds sometimes withdraws in social situations. He prefers quiet moments over constant engagement. Stewart shared her views on the "Green Lantern" star during her appearance as a special guest on Bilt Rewards' November "Rent Free" game show.
When Bilt's CEO Ankur Jain, 34, asked her which celebrities people thought she'd find most fun to spend time with, she mentioned her cooking show partner Snoop Dogg likely topped the list. Stewart also guessed Reynolds might be on the list but didn't seem enthusiastic. "He's probably on the list just 'cause he covers himself up in his movies and you don't see his face — Ryan Reynolds, is he one of those?" she queried.
"And you want to know something? He's not so funny in real life," Stewart continued. "No, he's not so funny. He's very serious." She later removed Reynolds from her list, opting for Taylor Swift instead. "Then I would take Ryan off it, and I would put in somebody else," the cookbook author quipped.
When pressed about her comment on Reynolds, Stewart elaborated. "He's a good actor," she explained. "He can act funny, but he isn't funny. Maybe he can get to be funny again." Realizing her potential faux pas, she added, "I'm going to get in trouble. He's my neighbor."
Reynolds playfully responded on social media after hearing Stewart's remarks. "I'd disagree with her. But I tried that once. The woman is unexpectedly spry. She really closed the gap after a mile or so," he wrote on X. His friend Hugh Jackman also chimed in with a cheeky comment. "Finally someone says it," he joked.
Reynolds has previously discussed his anxiety and mental health. "I've had anxiety my whole life really. And you know, I feel like I have two parts of my personality, that one takes over when that happens," the actor shared in 2022 on "CBS Sunday Mornings." He also revealed to Page Six how nervous he'd be before any live appearance.
"I remember I'd be standing backstage before the curtain would open, and I would think to myself, 'I'm gonna die. I'm literally gonna die here," he confessed in October 2023. "The curtain's gonna open and … I'm just gonna be a symphony of vomit — just, like, something horrible's gonna happen!" Reynolds said.
