Marvel's First Family is on the move — and this time, it's deeply personal. Over the past few months, Marvel Studios has been gradually releasing intriguing details about Matt Shakman's upcoming MCU film, The Fantastic Four: First Steps. In February, it was announced that Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach had secured the leading roles. Since then, we've witnessed Ralph Ineson cast as the planet-devourer Galactus, Kevin Feige hinting at the movie's 1960s setting, and even caught a glimpse of the Fantasticar at San Diego Comic Con. Now, as filming approaches its end for the MCU's 37th installment, Marvel has unveiled the first official synopsis for First Steps.

According to a press release on Disney's official site, the plot description for The Fantastic Four: First Steps is as follows: "Set against the lively backdrop of a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps introduces Marvel’s First Family — Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic (Pascal), Sue Storm/Invisible Woman (Kirby), Johnny Storm/Human Torch (Quinn) and Ben Grimm/The Thing (Moss-Bachrach) as they confront their most formidable challenge yet. Balancing their duties as heroes with the strength of their family bond, they must protect Earth from a voracious space deity known as Galactus (Ralph Ineson) and his enigmatic Herald, Silver Surfer (Julia Garner). And if Galactus’ plan to consume the entire planet and all its inhabitants weren’t dire enough, it suddenly becomes intensely personal."

While the synopsis is light on specifics, a few details are noteworthy. Firstly, the film's setting in a "1960s-inspired" world supports theories that First Steps will be set apart from Earth-616. Additionally, it confirms Julia Garner's role as the Silver Surfer, a long-held assumption. Most intriguingly, the hint that Galactus' planet-consuming plot has a 'very personal' aspect suggests that Shakman's film will have lasting effects on Marvel's First Family as they integrate into the MCU.

Beyond the synopsis, Disney's press release also confirms Paul Walter Hauser, John Malkovich, and Natasha Lyonne's appearances, though their roles remain unspecified. The ensemble also welcomes Ted Lasso's Sarah Niles. As previously announced, composer Michael Giacchino will provide the score for the Fantastic Four's MCU debut. With the 25 July 2025 release date approaching, fans won't have to wait much longer for The Fantastic Four: First Steps to hit theaters. Flame on!
