Just over two years ago, Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai started his YouTube channel to offer fans worldwide a behind-the-scenes look at game development and design. Recently, Sakurai posted his last video on the channel, hinting at a new project that could be his first game since Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was released in 2018.
Sakurai revealed that he was approached in 2021 to work on a video game proposal, around the same time he was finalizing the last DLC character, Sora, for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Although he didn't provide specific details about the new project, he suggested that it might be unveiled soon.
"I received a request to write a game proposal, which I completed very quickly," Sakurai told IGN. "I apologize for not being able to share more about this project, but if we manage to get it made, it should be announced sooner or later."
While this information is limited, it's likely that Sakurai's next game won't be another Super Smash Bros. title. In 2021, he discussed the need for the series to evolve beyond his direct involvement, and he wasn't certain about the future direction of the game after featuring an 89-character roster that included Nintendo's top icons and guest characters from franchises like Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid.
Given that all of Sakurai's previous games have been exclusive to Nintendo systems, it's a reasonable assumption that his next project will also be released by the company. Until an official announcement is made, fans will have to wait for further details.
