Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar, the UAE's leading clean energy firm, and its partners, have achieved a noteworthy milestone in the development of their 1GW wind farm project in Kazakhstan, with the formal signing of the Investment Agreement. The signing took place during COP29 in Baku, and was witnessed by Nurlan Baibazarov, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Economy of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Nurlan Zhakupov, Chairman of the Board of Samruk-Kazyna, and Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar. The agreement was executed by Almassadam Satkaliyev, Kazakhstan's Minister of Energy, and Abdulla Zayed, Director of Business and Project Development at Masdar.

This wind farm marks Masdar's first venture in Kazakhstan, the largest economy in Central Asia. Situated in the Jambyl region, the project also incorporates a 600-megawatt-hour Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). The 1GW wind farm is a collaborative effort between W Solar, Qazaq Green Power (a subsidiary of Samruk-Kazyna), the Kazakhstan Investment Development Fund, and Masdar as the lead developer. This significant investment positions Kazakhstan as a prominent player in the clean energy sector and is poised to become one of the largest wind farms in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region.

Construction is slated to begin in the first quarter of 2026. Upon completion, the wind farm will supply electricity to approximately 300,000 homes in southern Kazakhstan, annually preventing the emission of 2 million tonnes of CO2. Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, emphasized the strategic partnership between the UAE and Kazakhstan, highlighting their joint commitment to achieving net-zero ambitions and tripling global renewable energy capacity by 2030, as outlined in the UAE Consensus.

Almassadam Satkaliyev, Kazakhstan's Minister of Energy, expressed pride in the scale of the country's renewable energy ambitions, stating that the 1GW wind farm in Jambyl is a testament to their commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2060. Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, COP28 President, and Chairman of Masdar, noted that the 1GW Wind Farm in Jambyl represents a tangible step towards supporting Kazakhstan's net-zero goals. Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, expressed confidence in the project's positive impact on the region, highlighting Masdar's track record in large-scale renewable energy projects.

This announcement aligns with the UAE's support for Kazakhstan's climate action plans, building on the commitment made at COP28 to jointly develop Kazakhstan's renewables sector. The Jambyl wind farm will play a crucial role in accelerating Kazakhstan's energy transition, aiming to increase renewables to 15% of its energy supply by 2030 (and 50% by 2050) and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. Since its inception in 2006, Masdar has been instrumental in advancing the UAE's vision of global leadership in sustainability and climate action, with a goal to expand its renewable energy portfolio to 100GW by 2030 and become a major producer of green hydrogen.
