Rory McIlroy secured his sixth Race to Dubai title after Thriston Lawrence finished in the middle of the pack at the DP World Tour Championship. The Northern Irishman only required a top-11 finish at Jumeirah Golf Estates to claim the top spot in the season rankings, with South African Lawrence being the only player capable of denying him with a win in Dubai.
However, Lawrence's challenge never materialized, and when he concluded the event with a one under par score, McIlroy clinched his third consecutive Race to Dubai crown with five holes remaining in his final round. The world No 3 now stands alongside Spanish legend Seve Ballesteros in second place on the all-time list with six order-of-merit victories, with only Colin Montgomerie ahead of them with eight wins.
McIlroy had expressed his desire to be on the final green on Sunday with both trophies in hand, and he found himself in a two-way battle for the DP World Tour Championship title with Rasmus Højgaard. Højgaard's identical twin brother, Nicolai, had won the season-ending event a year ago.
