Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have reportedly acquired a new residence in Europe. The royal couple recently purchased a home in sunny Portugal, as reported by DailyMail. Meghan, 43, and Harry, 40, have not owned any property in Europe since 2023, when they were asked to vacate Frogmore Cottage, their UK home on the grounds of Windsor Castle, which they moved into after their 2018 wedding.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex's decision to buy a vacation home in Portugal seems logical, given that the country is also home to two other members of the Windsor dynasty: Princess Eugenie and her husband, Jack Brooksbank. The couple, who recently celebrated their six-year wedding anniversary, own a property in the CostaTerra Golf and Ocean Club, a luxury development of 300 properties on the Atlantic Ocean in the small town of Melides, approximately 81 miles south of Lisbon, the Portuguese capital.
Brooksbank, 38, works in the marketing and sales department of CostaTerra, which is part of a company founded by Mike Meldman. Meldman, along with George Clooney, invested in the tequila company Casamigos, for which Brooksbank previously served as a brand ambassador. Eugenie, 34, and Brooksbank split their time between London and Portugal with their two sons, three-year-old August and sixteen-month-old Ernest.
It remains unclear whether Meghan and Prince Harry's new home is within the CostaTerra development. The purchase of a Portugal home could potentially allow the couple to obtain a 'Golden Visa,' according to DailyMail, which might grant them 'visa-free access to the European Union's Schengen area.'
The Sussexes have visited Portugal before. Last year, they reportedly enjoyed a 'romantic three-night break' in the country after attending Prince Harry's Invictus Games in Dusseldorf, Germany. Rumors suggested they stayed at CostaTerra with Eugenie and Brooksbank, who have also visited the couple at their $14 million home in Montecito, California. Their stay at CostaTerra was seemingly confirmed by Jose Santos, head of the Alentejo Tourism Board, who mentioned they had a 'short stay.'
The couple's previous European home, Frogmore Cottage, was a wedding gift from Queen Elizabeth II. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex spent $3 million renovating Frogmore, initially funded by the British taxpayer through the Sovereign Grant and later reimbursed by the royals. Harry and Meghan lived at Frogmore only briefly, leaving when they stepped down from their roles as senior working members of the royal family in 2020. Eugenie and Brooksbank then took over the lease and lived there for a time.
Harry and Meghan are reportedly close to Eugenie and Brooksbank, who were the only members of the royal family featured in their Netflix docuseries. Their departure from Frogmore coincided with the release of Prince Harry's memoir 'Spare,' which delved into royal drama involving Charles, Queen Camilla, Prince William, and Kate Middleton. The home was later offered to Princess Eugenie's father, Prince Andrew, who reportedly declined it as it did not meet his standards of grandeur.
