Mercedes has recently announced plans to introduce more V-8 models under the AMG badge, and it appears that the CLE63 is next in line. A recent spy video captured in sunny Spain showcases prototypes of the top-tier CLE version in coupe form, with heavily camouflaged front and rear ends. Despite the video being muted, it's easy to discern that this isn't the '53' model due to the distinctive rectangular quad exhaust tips, which contrast with the round finishers found on the lesser AMG variant. The unmistakable growl emitted by the engine strongly suggests the presence of a V-8 powerplant.

Rumors suggest that Mercedes-AMG initially intended to equip the CLE63 with the same four-cylinder, plug-in hybrid powertrain found in the C63. However, due to lukewarm demand for the C63 sedan and wagon, the automaker has reportedly revised its plans. The CLE63 coupe and convertible are now expected to feature a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 engine with mild-hybrid assistance. This change in engine configuration is likely to result in a reduction in horsepower, with the CLE63 now expected to deliver 585 hp instead of the 671 hp available in the C63. Despite this, the CLE63 will offer consistent horsepower delivery, unlike the C63 and GLC63 models.

The decision to switch engines so late in the development process is somewhat surprising, especially considering that the lesser 53 model already boasts an inline-six engine. While the flagship model would have had more power with the hybrid setup, enthusiasts remain deeply interested in the engine type. Unfortunately, it's too late for the C63 to revert to a V-8, as the car has already been released.

In addition to the exhaust tips and engine sound, another intriguing detail caught our attention. Notice the absence of a fuel door on the rear fender on the driver's side? The C63 and GLC63 models feature a charging port in this location, but that's not the case here. This observation further supports the belief that these prototypes are not plug-in hybrids.

Given the late engine change, it's logical to assume that the market launch might be delayed to allow for additional development and testing. Mercedes is in no rush to unveil the car, especially since the CLE53 is less than a year old. Expect the full-fat 63 models to hit the market later in 2025.
