Merlin Entertainments has unveiled a fresh collaboration with Mojang Studios to 'bring Minecraft adventures to life' through rides and attractions worldwide. The company is investing over $110 million in this venture, which it claims will result in 'immersive and interactive entertainment attractions in fixed locations around the globe.' The press release provided few specifics, but it did highlight that the agreement also involves the creation of real-world 'touchpoints' that unlock in-game content.
The initial $110 million investment is earmarked for two attractions, one each in the US and the UK, slated to open in either 2026 or 2027 at undisclosed locations. 'This will encompass the development of groundbreaking concepts for Minecraft-themed guest accommodations, retail, and food & beverage, alongside thrilling experiences—including a Minecraft-themed ride—at Merlin locations in these two countries. In the long run, Merlin plans to extend these experiences to other global destinations,' the company stated.
Merlin operates Legoland theme parks and theme parks in the UK, Italy, and Germany, such as Alton Towers Resort and Gardaland Resort. Additionally, Merlin manages 'Gateway' attractions, which include Madame Tussauds, Sea Life, and attractions themed around brands like Peppa Pig and Shrek. Merlin's Magic Making team is collaborating with Mojang to 'ensure authenticity' for the Minecraft rides and attractions they develop. Minecraft marks the first video game franchise that Merlin has partnered with.
Minecraft ranks among the best-selling video games ever, and the franchise continues to thrive. A Minecraft movie, featuring Jason Momoa and Jack Black, is in the works, with a new trailer set to release today, November 19. In other theme park developments, Nintendo and Universal have just revealed more details about the Donkey Kong Country area at Universal Studios Japan, scheduled to open in 2025. Meanwhile, in the US, the countdown has begun for one of Disney World's top rides, Magic Kingdom's Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, which closes on January 6, 2025, and won't reopen for a full year.
