The Listed Dubai Creek Mile has a storied past of producing top-tier horses, and Meshtri has now etched his name into that illustrious list following his determined victory in Friday's Dubai Racing Carnival highlight.
Nine horses competed in the Nakheel-sponsored event, with G2 Godolphin Mile runner-up Walk Of Stars posing the most significant threat. Despite challenging Meshtri in the final furlong, Walk Of Stars couldn't overtake the winner. Meshtri, in just his fourth career start for jockey Ben Coen and trainer Michael Costa, secured the win by nearly a length.
Coen, who has now notched his third win of the season, attributed Meshtri's improved performance to his previous race, where he finished fourth to Imperial Emperor. "My horse was a bit too eager last time, but with blinkers today, I managed a good start and controlled the pace around the bend," Coen explained. "When Tadhg's horse [Walk Of Stars] came close, Meshtri found extra reserves."
The Thunder Snow Handicap, sponsored by Nakheel, was a test of endurance, fittingly named after a resilient horse. Lahresh emerged victorious, outlasting the early leader Saayedd in the final 200 meters. Trained by Musabbeh Al Mheiri, Lahresh won by over two lengths, with Go Soldier Go making a remarkable late surge to finish third.
Ridden by Silvestre De Sousa, Lahresh is a four-year-old in his second season, owned by Naser Askar. Connor Beasley and Ahmad Bin Harmash celebrated a double victory with Gamekeeper winning the Palm Jebel Ali Handicap over 1400 meters. Bred from Blue Point and Gamilati, a Listed UAE 1000 Guineas winner, Gamekeeper demonstrated potential in his second dirt start, besting stablemate King’s Fountain by three and a half lengths.
Beasley noted, "He joined us at the start of the season and has shown marked improvement since his debut at Jebel Ali. The visor today clearly made a huge difference."
Earlier, Beasley also triumphed with Dark Saffron in the Como Residences Maiden for two-year-old colts over 1200 meters. The Flameaway colt, purchased for $120,000 at the Ocala April Sale, leveraged his race experience to set the pace and secure a four and a quarter length victory over African Candy.
Arigatou Gozaimasu, a Japanese term for thank you, aptly described the performance of Salem Bin Ghadayer's Honest Mischief filly in the Dubai Islands Maiden for two-year-old fillies. Making her debut under Bernardo Pinheiro, she dominated the race, winning by eight and a half lengths over Flama Sunshine.
Meydan Racecourse will host its third meeting of the season on December 6, featuring the Listed Garhoud Sprint as the main event.
