Microsoft has unveiled a range of updates and enhancements to the Xbox UI and the Xbox app on mobile devices and PCs, aiming to improve user experience. One notable addition is the ability to pre-load games and updates on Xbox consoles through the mobile app. While Microsoft hasn't specified when this feature will be available, another enhancement, Game Bar Compact Mode, is already live. This mode is designed for smaller screens, making it easier to navigate the Xbox app on mobile or handheld Windows devices. It also allows users to quickly exit a game in progress.
"With Compact Mode enabled, access to widgets and navigation is simplified to ensure you can get to the content you want as easily as possible on smaller screens," explained an Xbox blog post detailing the September update. "Compact Mode is also optimized for controller navigation, allowing users to switch between widgets using the left and right bumpers."
Another upcoming feature for PC users will enable them to view and install DLC and other game add-ons more conveniently. "Now you can view and install all add-ons related to the game you are installing, regardless of when you acquired them or if they were part of the same bundle," Microsoft's blog post states. This update aims to provide a comprehensive view of all content related to the game at a glance.
The Xbox mobile app is also set to receive a significant update, allowing users to manage their Game Pass subscriptions directly from the app. Previously, Xbox Game Pass content was segregated into its own app, which Microsoft is now integrating into the main Xbox mobile app. This update will initially roll out to Xbox beta members this week, with broader availability expected soon. As part of these changes, new downloads of the Xbox Game Pass app will no longer be supported starting in November.
The updated app will also enable users to browse the entire Game Pass catalog, and Game Pass Ultimate members will be able to claim perks and livestream select games via Xbox Cloud Gaming on iOS or Android devices. Console users will also benefit from the ability to pre-download games and updates, ensuring they are ready to play as soon as a game launches or an update is released. This feature is already live on Xbox consoles and can be accessed through the "My Games & Apps" section.
Finally, the September update introduces more useful notifications for console users. "With the new update, when a game on your wish list is released, enters the Game Pass library, or becomes available as part of a Free Play Day promotion, you will now receive console notifications," the blog post explains. Users can opt out of these notifications in the console's settings menu if desired.
