Microsoft is tapping into the visual appeal of the 2000s with its latest Xbox Ghost Cipher wireless controller. While the internal components remain unchanged, the exterior is where this controller truly stands out, featuring a transparent clear design, silver interior, metallic accents, and more. This new controller will be available from October 8, priced at $70 through the Xbox Store.

This isn't Microsoft's first foray into transparent Xbox controllers—the Xbox 20th-anniversary controller featured a darker transparent shell with green highlights, and the Sky Cipher, released earlier this year, boasted a vibrant blue design—but the Ghost Cipher allows for an excellent view of the internal components. The clear top case is complemented by metallic and silver interior parts that shine through, while bronze metallic triggers, a matching D-pad, and ash grey rubberized grips provide elegant finishing touches.

Beyond the aesthetics, this remains the same Xbox controller introduced four years ago. It continues to be a reliable all-rounder, with a robust construction, durable face buttons, and a handy share button. This controller is compatible with Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles, as well as wirelessly with PCs and smartphones via Bluetooth. While it may not match the advanced features of Sony's DualSense controller, it remains a comfortable option for extended gaming sessions. It also offers excellent battery life, allowing users to opt for regular AA batteries or a rechargeable battery pack.

At the Xbox Design Lab, gamers can also create their own custom transparent Elite Series 2 controller. This nostalgic collection draws inspiration from '90s and 2000s technology, offering several retro-modern designs in the expanded Cipher series: Velocity, Astral, Surf, Candy, and Purple Cipher. Additionally, two new chromatic D-pad and paddle designs—Energy Chroma and Sunset Chroma—add even more color options to the controllers.
