During The Game Awards, developer Milestone unveiled its latest project, a revival of the iconic arcade racer Screamer. Although the trailer didn't reveal any gameplay, it hinted at a darker tone for the series, set in a neon-lit city reminiscent of classic '80s and '90s anime. Milestone aims to combine Screamer's traditional arcade driving with a rich narrative that includes multiple character arcs. The game is slated for release in 2026 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
Screamer draws heavily from anime and manga of the '80s and '90s. The game's narrative and visual style will be enriched by animated cutscenes produced in collaboration with Polygon Pictures, the renowned Japanese animation studio behind series like Tron: Uprising, Transformers Prime, and Pacific Rim: The Black. According to Milestone, Troy Baker, known for his role in The Last of Us, will voice a pivotal character in the game.
The storyline will explore themes of human determination, vengeance, love, and greed, with a nod to classic sci-fi influences. The original Screamer game debuted in 1995, famous for its arcade-style gameplay and high system requirements. It was followed by three sequels: Screamer 2, Screamer Rally, and Screamer 4x4, all developed by Milestone. For PC gamers at the time, it was the go-to alternative to console racers like Ridge Racer and Daytona USA.
