Many of the latest movie adaptations have drawn attention by starting their titles with the word 'the.' Films like The Super Mario Bros. Movie, The Angry Birds Movie, and The Emoji Movie have all followed this trend. However, A Minecraft Movie is breaking away from this pattern for a particular reason, as explained by Mojang Studios' Torfi Frans Olafsson and director Jared Hess in a recently shared behind-the-scenes video.
Olafsson, Mojang's creative director of entertainment, noted, 'Minecraft is brimming with possibilities for adventures. Every individual's journey is unique.' Hess added, 'When we were shaping this into a film, we decided, 'Let's just tell our fun story.' It was a deliberate choice to title this movie A Minecraft Movie instead of The Minecraft Movie.'
In the video, Jason Momoa provides insights into his character, Garrett 'The Garbage Man' Garrison. Garrett's backstory reveals that he was once a champion arcade player in the '80s and '90s, but he has never been able to move on from that fleeting moment of fame. The promo does not divulge much about the other main characters, such as Steve (Jack Black), Henry (Sebastian Eugene Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers), and Dawn (Danielle Brooks). However, it hints that all of them seek the creative freedom that the Minecraft universe offers.
Additionally, the video gives a glimpse of the creatures that emerge after dark in Minecraft's world, including zombies, walking skeletons, and the Creeper. The promo also showcases the creation of the video game elements in A Minecraft Movie, particularly the block-shaped objects that form the background imagery.
A Minecraft Movie is set to hit theaters on April 4, 2025. The most recent trailer was released earlier this week.
