The newly crowned Miss Universe, Danish model Victoria Kjaer Theilvig, faced a wave of criticism after posting a video online that seemed to show her lip-synching a racial slur from a Jay-Z song over the weekend. The controversy erupted when she appeared to mouth lyrics from "Empire State of Mind" that include the n-word in a nearly 20-second TikTok clip filmed atop the Empire State Building.
Social media users were quick to react. "I can’t believe I’m witnessing this in real time," one user commented, while another wrote, "Girl WHAT?!." Another TikTok account speculated, "They gonna take that crown." Some debated whether she began lip-synching immediately after Jay-Z raps the n-word in the New York-themed song.
Despite the backlash, some defended Theilvig. "Yall are some haters she clearly was smiling," one user insisted. Others dismissed the criticism as excessive. "A white woman sings a song by a black man and gets called racist by the woke mob," a user on X wrote. "She has nothing to apologize about."
Theilvig, 21, won the 73rd Miss Universe final earlier this month in Mexico City, competing against over 120 other contestants. She is the first-ever Danish woman to win the title. Conservatives celebrated her victory, contrasting it with last year's pageant, which saw a transgender woman from Portugal achieve a top 20 ranking and a 22-year-old become the first transgender Miss Netherlands.
Following her historic win, Theilvig has been touring New York City. She recently flipped the switch to light the Empire State Building red and white – the colors of Denmark – in commemoration of her victory. The Post sought comment from the Miss Universe Organization late Monday night.
