Monument Valley 3, the latest installment in the indie puzzle game series, has officially launched today, exclusively on Netflix Games. In a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz, developer Ustwo discussed its journey with mobile platforms and the decision to incorporate live-service elements into Monument Valley 3 as a seamless progression. Ustwo plans to roll out fresh content for the game with each real-life season, accompanied by new activities and puzzles on a consistent basis. Previous entries in the series featured downloadable content (DLC).
"For Monument Valley, we've always released downloadable content. However, the timing has been less structured and more unpredictable," explained director Jennifer Estaris. "This time, we wanted to create a healthy habit for players, ensuring they know new content is on the way and get excited about it. This approach also aligns with the game's themes of caring for the world, making it a continuous experience rather than a one-time play."
Ustwo has previously released games on Netflix and Apple Arcade, such as Assemble with Care and Desta: The Memories Between, showcasing the developer's familiarity with mobile platforms. Monument Valley, as a series, originated on mobile devices before expanding to PC.
"Personally, I believe Monument Valley 3 wouldn't feel like a true Monument Valley game if it had to conform to the demands of a free-to-play model to survive," said lead producer Jonathan Lau. "It could only thrive on a subscription service, regardless of the platform."
Currently, Monument Valley 3 holds an average score of around 70 on Metacritic, based on three reviews. Both the original Monument Valley and its sequel are also available on Netflix. While earlier games eventually received PC versions, it remains to be seen if Monument Valley 3 will follow suit, as it is currently exclusive to Netflix.
