MSI has unveiled updated versions of its Claw handheld gaming PC, now available in seven- and eight-inch models. The Claw 7 AI+ starts at $799, while the Claw 8 AI+ is priced at $899. These new models come with several enhancements over their predecessor, including larger batteries, ergonomic design tweaks, and Intel's latest Lunar Lake Core Ultra 7 processors. Both devices are also Copilot+ PC-capable, hence the AI designation. RAM has been doubled to 32GB each, and the CPU speed has been boosted to 2.2GHz. The original MSI Claw featured a 1.2GHz CPU on its Ultra 5 base model, with the Ultra 7 version clocking in at 1.4GHz.
Another notable change is the aesthetic of the MSI Claw, which now offers khaki-colored panels inspired by wind-sculpted desert rocks. For those who prefer a more conventional look, black models are also available. The sticks, bumpers, D-pad, and Hall Effect triggers have been redesigned for more precise button presses. Both the Claw 7 and Claw 8 are equipped with a 120Hz VRR LCD display, featuring an improved resolution of 1920 x 1200.
The Claw 8 boasts an 80-watt-hour battery, significantly larger than the 53-watt-hour battery of the first model, while the Claw 7 comes with a 54.5-watt-hour battery. The initial MSI Claw received mixed reviews upon its launch earlier this year, praised for its excellent speakers and comfortable design but criticized for its weak battery life and subpar performance compared to competitors in the Windows handheld gaming PC market.
If these shortcomings are acceptable, the MSI Claw is currently available at a reduced price. Amazon offers the MSI Claw with 16GB of RAM and an Intel Core Ultra 7 processor for $500 (originally $749), or with an Intel Ultra Core 5 processor for $430 (originally $699). While more expensive, the Asus ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go provide a superior overall experience. The 2023 Asus ROG Ally Z1 is on sale for $400 at Walmart, making it a solid choice for indie and AA games, though AAA gaming may require significant graphical compromises. For high-end gaming on the go, consider the Z1 Extreme model or the newer ROG Ally X, which offers up to 2TB of storage capacity.
The Legion Go is also highly recommended, currently available for $540 (originally $700). It features an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor, Radeon 700M Series GPU, 16GB of RAM, 512GB SSD, and an 8.8-inch display supporting a 144Hz refresh rate and a 2560 x 1600 resolution.
