Muhammad has emerged as the most popular name for baby boys in Britain in 2023, surpassing Noah to claim the top spot, according to official figures released on Thursday.
Muhammad has consistently ranked among the top 10 names since 2016 and secured the second position in 2022, as per the annual list compiled by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
Oliver has overtaken George to become the third most popular name for boys. Meanwhile, for baby girls, the top three names in 2023—Olivia, Amelia, and Isla—remained unchanged from the previous year.
The ONS noted that the influence of celebrity culture seemed to have impacted the popularity of certain names, with babies being named Reign and Saint after members of the Kardashian-Jenner family, and an increase in names inspired by pop musicians like Billie Eilish.
However, names associated with the royal family, such as Charles, George, and Harry, are seeing a decline in popularity.
