Authorities reported that at least two individuals lost their lives and 20 others were wounded when multiple coaches of a passenger train derailed in India's Uttar Pradesh on Thursday.
Television footage depicted the Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express, which links northern India to the eastern state of Assam, with its coaches overturned alongside the tracks. Passengers were seen outside the coaches with their belongings.
The incident took place in Gonda district, over 100 kilometers from the state capital, Lucknow. A medical team was dispatched to the scene to attend to the injured before their transfer to a hospital, according to the state's relief commissioner.
The derailment happened at approximately 2:30 PM (0900 GMT), with initial reports indicating that about five coaches had derailed. Railway spokesperson Pankaj Singh informed the ANI news agency that the immediate focus is on expediting relief and rescue operations.
In a similar incident last month, at least 15 people were killed and many more injured when a freight train collided with a stationary passenger train in West Bengal.
