Monterey Car Week is almost here, which means it's no surprise to spot some impressive vehicles in Southern California at the moment. However, this particular car has grabbed our eye. Seen on a transport trailer at Los Angeles International Airport, it appears to be an incredibly rare Porsche 911 GT1 Strassenversion. But it's not. Or at least, not in the form we're familiar with. Honestly, we're not entirely sure what we're looking at. Hence, we're turning to you, Motor1 readers. Examine this image posted by lfn1993 on Reddit and share your thoughts.
A Porsche spokesperson couldn't confirm to Motor1 whether this vehicle is part of its collection when contacted for comment. The overall design strongly resembles a Strassenversion, from the flared rear haunches to the roof scoop and vented hood. Yet, the specifics differ. Instead of a large rear wing, there's a ducktail. The side vents are bigger and squared, and the headlights appear squared as well. Additionally, there are notably wide side sills. Could this be a contemporary reinterpretation of the 1990s classic? It's a viable hypothesis.
Another hypothesis suggests it might be a Le Mans-inspired 911 crafted by RML Group. The UK-based firm recently released two teaser images of a car that closely resembles this one. However, like the Strassenversion, it doesn't match perfectly. RML's project, dubbed P39, features a Le Mans-style wing instead of the ducktail on this mystery car. The front fascia and headlights are also different, and this car includes side mirrors. This could be a significant clue, as RML Group is also developing a track-only version named the P40. There are no teasers for that, but a track car often lacks mirrors and would likely have different aerodynamic features compared to a street car.
It's possible the teaser images don't represent the final P39 design. And there's no guarantee mirrors won't be added later. Perhaps there are temporary panels installed to conceal other design elements. Alternatively, this could be an enormous body kit attached to an old Pontiac Fiero. It could literally be anything. Regardless, the timing of this car's arrival in LA just days before Monterey Car Week seems too perfect to be a mere coincidence. We have several people heading to California for the event, so keep an eye out. When we uncover the answers, you'll know too.
