Naomi Campbell has finally spoken out about the tragic death of her ex-boyfriend, Liam Payne, who passed away at the age of 31. The 54-year-old British supermodel, who dated the former One Direction star for four months in 2019 when she was 48 and he was 25, shared her thoughts on social media.
On Friday, Campbell commented on her friend Nicole Scherzinger's Instagram post, which was a tribute to the pop star who tragically fell to his death from a third-floor balcony of a hotel room in Argentina. Scherzinger, who was a judge on 'X Factor' when Payne was a contestant in 2010, penned a heartfelt message to the late singer. Keeping her own message brief, Campbell simply commented, '🕊️💔🕊️🙏🏾' on Scherzinger's post.
During their brief romance, Campbell, who was 23 years older than Payne, exchanged some flirtatious messages with the 'Strip That Down' singer in January 2019. 'Perfection in a person … don’t give me those eyes,' Payne commented on one of her social media posts, to which she replied, 'Beautiful soul.' Later that month, the couple attended a concert together for Nigerian artist Davido in London. The following month, they were spotted together at dinner in Ghana.
It remains unclear whether Campbell maintained contact with Payne in recent years. However, Scherzinger reportedly exchanged messages with Payne on the same day he died on October 16. 'I will forever cherish and treasure the time we shared together, from fifteen years ago when One Direction was born, right up until just a few weeks ago,' Scherzinger wrote in part. 'It’s been so hard to process that you’re no longer here, but I am grateful to have known your kind heart, sweet soul and character.'
Payne, who had a toxic mixture of drugs in his system, died instantly from massive internal and external injuries sustained in the fall. In addition to pink cocaine, a combination of methamphetamine, ketamine, and ecstasy, the drugs detected in his bloodstream through toxicology screening included benzodiazepine, crack, and cocaine. A makeshift aluminum pipe for ingesting the substances was also found nearby, according to ABC News.
Payne's devastated father, Geoff Payne, has been informed that he may have to wait up to 10 days to obtain permission to bring his son's body home. On Thursday, police raided the hotel room where Payne had been staying at the time of his death. Authorities are reportedly seeking 'new intel' about the hotel's staff. The hotel 'must provide' more security camera footage from October 16. Officials were also searching for documents within the Casa Sur's registration books and information stored in its computers.
