Naomi Osaka, a two-time US Open champion, showcased her prowess on the tennis court on Tuesday, embodying a tennis superhero with a twist – her super suit featured bows instead of a cape. Her entrance at Louis Armstrong Stadium ignited both the tennis world and social media with a custom-made Nike ensemble crafted by Yoon Ahn, complete with a ruffled skirt, jacket, shoes, and headphones all adorned with matching bows.
"I feel that when I wear this outfit, it's akin to a super suit, and I try to embody that spirit," stated the former world number one. The green-and-white attire, part of two color schemes Osaka will wear at Flushing Meadows this year, was inspired by Japan's vibrant, playful, and expressive Harajuku fashion. "I selected the colors at least a year ago. I enjoy being involved in all aspects of my endeavors, be it fashion or otherwise," she shared with journalists following her win against 10th seed Jelena Ostapenko in her first match on Tuesday.
Following in the footsteps of tennis fashion icon Serena Williams, Osaka draws strength from self-expression. However, she did hesitate before stepping onto the hard court, thinking, "I hope this isn't too much," referring to her tutu and bow jacket in green. "I felt everyone was looking at me oddly. Then I put on the headphones, which really sealed the look."
Once on the court, Osaka's intense focus and powerful serve dominated, maintaining her serve and delivering nine aces to Ostapenko, securing a victory in straight sets. "I recall thinking that I must win this match to wear my other color," she said. "Yes, you'll see my other color next time."
