For the first time, the Nobel committee engaged in a conversation with Narges Mohammadi, the 2023 peace prize laureate who is currently on temporary medical leave from an Iranian prison. This interaction was documented in footage released late Sunday by the organization. Mohammadi recounted the moment the women's ward at Evin prison burst into chants of the protest slogan 'Woman Life Freedom' upon learning of her Nobel Prize win, as evidenced by clips of the video call shared on social media by Nobel.
'One of my fellow prisoners managed to call her husband, who was also incarcerated in the men's ward. Through them, we received the astonishing news: I had been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize,' Mohammadi shared with the committee, donning a green top with her hair uncovered. The 52-year-old has been imprisoned since November 2021 due to multiple convictions stemming from her advocacy against the mandatory hijab for women and capital punishment in Iran.
Following her victory in last year's Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts in championing human rights in Iran, Mohammadi's two children accepted the award on her behalf. She was granted a three-week release from prison on medical grounds, having recently undergone bone surgery. However, Mohammadi's supporters argue that this temporary release is insufficient and continue to advocate for her unconditional and permanent freedom.
