Ndemic, the developer behind the popular game Plague Inc., has just released a surprising sequel to their hit title. Instead of focusing on a pessimistic pandemic simulation, the new game takes a more optimistic approach, focusing on rebuilding society after the end of the world. After Inc. is set in the aftermath of Plague Inc.'s zombie scenario, where players are tasked with managing human civilization in the United Kingdom following a zombie apocalypse.
Unlike its predecessors, After Inc. carries an optimistic tone. The game features a vibrant and painterly aesthetic, in stark contrast to the harsh user interface of Plague Inc. or the cold, satellite-map style of Rebel Inc., a previous follow-up that centered around combating insurgencies. In an interview with the Game File newsletter, game designer James Vaughn stated, “I've tried to create a more cheerful and optimistic game this time.”
In each session, players take on the role of a settlement leader, where they must combat zombies, search for resources, navigate communal disputes, and research new technologies. A single scenario typically lasts around 20 minutes and unlocks meta upgrades that can affect future settlements. After Inc. is priced at $2, the same as Rebel Inc. and $1 more than Plague Inc. The store page indicates that this is a “special sale price” to celebrate the game's launch. Ndemic assures players of “no 'consumable microtransactions,'” meaning any content purchased will remain in the game permanently. The app store page also promises that the game will receive updates for years to come.
You can download After Inc. now on Google Play and the App Store, with a PC version expected to launch sometime next year. Plague Inc.'s sales surged at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, prompting the developer to donate $250,000 to COVID-19 research and release a free-at-launch expansion called The Cure, which focused on combating disease rather than spreading it.
