A descendant of India's Nehru-Gandhi family is set to enter the electoral arena, possibly bolstering the opposition's stance against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in parliament following his recent setback in elections, according to politicians and analysts. The family has historically been pivotal in uniting the main opposition Congress party's factions, enduring Modi's sweeping victories in 2014 and 2019, and his recent loss of a parliamentary majority. Congress attributes its near doubling of seats in the latest election to Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, 52, the party's general secretary, and her brother Rahul, who also invigorated the broader 'INDIA' opposition coalition led by Congress, compelling Modi to depend on allies for governance. Rahul and his mother Sonia, both former Congress presidents and current lawmakers, have not yet contested elections, but Priyanka, renowned for her oratory and appeal, is poised to run for office for the first time from one of the two seats Rahul recently won but must relinquish. Congress supporters have long advocated for her to run. Political analyst Rasheed Kidwai noted, 'They are going on the offensive because Priyanka is an excellent speaker. In the house, Mr. Modi will be on the defensive due to the presence of the two Gandhis.' Opposition leader Aaditya Thackeray endorsed Priyanka's candidacy, stating, 'A very strong and dedicated voice that will only make the voice of INDIA stronger in parliament.' Priyanka will contest a by-election in Wayanad, Kerala, after Rahul chose to retain his other seat in Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh. Indian law permits candidates to contest up to two seats but retain only one. Analysts predict Priyanka's victory in Wayanad, given her brother's past successes. If victorious, she and Rahul will join their mother Sonia in India's parliament. Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party criticizes Congress's dependence on the family, arguing it is not conducive to democracy. Despite Congress's improved performance, winning 99 seats compared to the BJP's 240, it marks a significant improvement from its previous lows. Priyanka pledged to 'work very hard and try my best to please everyone and be a good representative,' ensuring the continuity of Rahul's legacy in Wayanad.
