Monika Shergill, the head of Netflix India's OTT platform, is scheduled to meet the Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting today at Shastri Bhawan. This meeting is in response to concerns regarding the web series based on the hijacking of IC-814. Government sources emphasize the importance of respecting India's culture and civilization, stating, "Nobody has the right to play with the sentiments of the people of this nation."
The Netflix team is attending the meeting armed with research documents and footage to support their claim that the series aligns with publicly available resources, drawing from books and government statements. The series, titled 'IC-814- The Kandahar Hijack,' has sparked controversy on social media due to its portrayal of the hijackers.
A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Delhi High Court by Surjit Singh Yadav, the Chief of Hindu Sena, requesting a ban on the series. The PIL contends that the miniseries misrepresents the identities of the terrorists involved, attributing Hindu names like "Bhola" and "Shankar" to the actual hijackers.
BJP leader Amit Malviya criticized the series, accusing filmmaker Anubhav Sinha of legitimizing the criminal intent of the hijackers by using non-Muslim names. BJP leader Rajeev Chandrasekhar expressed satisfaction with the Ministry's attention to the issue. The series, created by Anubhav Sinha and Trishant Shrivastava, features actors Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapur, Vijay Varma, Arvind Swamy, Patralekhaa, and Dia Mirza, and is based on the events of December 24, 1999.
