The Netherlands will participate in the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest in Basel, Switzerland. However, flamboyant singer and 2024 favorite Joost Klein, who was disqualified from this year's competition due to a backstage altercation, has opted not to represent his country.

Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS expressed satisfaction with new rules agreed upon by event organizer the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which were demanded following this year’s edition in Sweden, where Klein's expulsion was deemed "very heavy and disproportionate" by AVROTROS.

"After months of discussions and consultations, the broadcaster has received sufficient guarantees from the EBU that structural changes will be implemented at the music festival," AVROTROS stated. The 2025 edition in Basel will feature "significantly reduced" backstage filming, a safety manager, and a safe space for performers.

This year, a female member of the production crew accused Klein of making threats during the semi-final in Malmö. The case was referred to the Swedish Prosecution Authority, which ultimately decided not to prosecute. Following the news that the investigation had been dropped due to lack of evidence, Klein took to Instagram to declare that "there is no case against me, because there never was a case." He emphasized the importance of mutual support and unity, suggesting that companies often prioritize financial protection over justice.

Despite adding the tag line "Eurovision 2025" to his social media channels, which sparked speculation about his potential participation in next year’s 69th edition, Klein has now clarified that he will not be taking part. "My team and I had everything ready, but it just doesn't feel good," he explained. "I need to give myself more time to heal."

AVROTROS is currently seeking a new Dutch representative, and interested performers have until 22 November to apply.
