Beginning September 1, residents and tourists from the UAE traveling to Schengen nations will be permitted to bring a maximum of 100ml of liquid in their carry-on bags. This update was shared by the European Council, noting that this policy shift is temporary and in reaction to potential threats. The Schengen area is a favored destination for both leisure and business travel among UAE citizens, and many Europeans also reside and work in the Emirates.
The European Commission plans to temporarily tighten liquid restrictions at EU airports by using Explosive Detection Systems for Cabin Baggage (EDSCB). These systems, present in select EU airports, currently allow for liquid containers larger than 100ml. However, starting September 1, 2024, these airports will revert to the standard 100ml limit per container.
Airports that already enforce the 100ml limit or do not use EDSCB technology will not experience changes. This adjustment is not due to a new threat but is a temporary technical measure coordinated with the EU's international partners.
Globally, most airports restrict the amount of liquids in carry-on luggage. The Commission is collaborating with member states and the European Civil Aviation Conference to quickly implement technical solutions for secure air travel.
Finnair, Finland's primary airline, also declared that from September 1, 2024, only 100ml liquid containers will be allowed in carry-on luggage at European airports, including Helsinki Airport. The total liquid allowance per passenger remains at two litres, and this change does not impact transfer passengers at Helsinki Airport.
