The portraits are showcased as part of an exhibition on watches at the Banco de España. ‘The Tyranny of Chronos’ presents a collection of clocks and watches from the bank’s archives, “crafted by artists from various backgrounds and historical periods, who challenge and defy the dominant perception of time in Western culture.” As part of this exhibition, there will be a formal unveiling of two new portraits of King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain, captured by Annie Leibowitz. Renowned American photographer Leibowitz, famous for her iconic images of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, and her numerous cover shots for magazines like Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, and Vogue, has created the first official photographic portraits of the current Spanish monarchy. These two photographs are the newest additions to the bank’s collection and will be presented by the former governor, Pablo Hernández de Cos. “Leibovitz's work marks a significant shift in a tradition that dates back to the institution’s inception, yet aligns with the approach of artists like Goya—also featured in the exhibition—who have always approached such commissions with a clear artistic vision,” the bank states in a press release.
