A fresh murder mystery is set to hit television screens as Left Bank Pictures, the production company behind 'The Crown,' is developing a new true crime series for ITV titled 'The Lady.' This four-part drama will delve into the life of Jane Andrews, a convicted killer and former dresser to Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York.

The series will present a 'partially fictionalized' account of Andrews' journey from being a trusted confidante of a royal family member to her conviction in 2001 for the murder of her lover, Thomas Cressman, in 2000. Written by Debbie O'Malley and directed by Lee Haven Jones, the show will also feature Florence Haddon-Cave, a producer of 'The Crown,' as an executive producer.

According to the show's description, 'The Lady' will trace the rise and fall of Jane Andrews, a former royal dresser whose rags-to-riches story took a tragic turn with her murder conviction. Helen Ziegler, overseeing the production for ITV and ITVX, praised Debbie O'Malley's scripts for their ability to re-examine the known facts about Jane Andrews and the events leading to Thomas Cressman's death.

ITV has previously explored Andrews' story in a 2020 documentary titled 'Fergie's Killer Dresser: The Jane Andrews Story.' Known as 'the fatal attraction killer,' Andrews worked for the Duchess of York for nearly a decade before the murder. She secured her position at Buckingham Palace by responding to an anonymous ad in 'The Lady' magazine, and was hired by Ferguson at the age of 21.

Andrews and Ferguson reportedly formed an immediate bond, with the Duchess affectionately calling her 'Lady Jane.' However, during the murder trial, Andrews was depicted as a social climber obsessed with the royal family. In 1998, she began a relationship with former stockbroker Thomas Cressman. In September 2000, during a vacation, Cressman rejected the idea of marrying Andrews, leading to an argument upon their return. That night, Andrews attacked Cressman with a cricket bat and stabbed him to death with a kitchen knife.

During her trial, Andrews was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and sentenced to life in prison. She was released in 2015 but returned to prison in 2018 for another alleged incident and was released again in August 2019.
