Nicole Kidman is finally setting the record straight about one of her most iconic memes. The 57-year-old Oscar winner recently sat down for an interview with British GQ, which was published on Monday, to clarify that the viral photo from 2001—showing her walking with a triumphant expression and her hands raised—has nothing to do with her divorce from Tom Cruise.
“That’s not true,” Kidman stated. “That was not me; that was from a film, that wasn’t real life. I know that image!” she added, though she did not specify the movie in question. The meme has circulated widely on the internet over the years, with Jenna Dewan sharing the throwback photo on her Instagram Stories following her divorce from Channing Tatum in September.
Kidman finalized her divorce from Cruise, 62, after 11 years of marriage around the time the viral photo was taken. The couple adopted two children together, Bella, 31, and Connor, 29, before their split. Cruise’s decision to file for divorce in 2001 came as a “shock” to Kidman, as she revealed in a 2012 interview with DuJour magazine.
“I thought our life together was perfect,” Kidman admitted. “It took me a very long time to heal. It was a shock to my system.” Fans have often speculated that the marriage ended due to Kidman’s refusal to join Cruise in his Scientology beliefs. Cruise, however, has kept the true reasons private, stating in a 2013 Vanity Fair interview, “She knows why, and I know why, [we divorced]. She’s the mother of my children, and I wish her well. And I think that you just move on.”
After her divorce from Kidman, Cruise went on to marry fellow actor Katie Holmes, 45, on November 18, 2006. The couple had a daughter, Suri, now 18, and divorced in August 2012. Meanwhile, Kidman married country superstar Keith Urban, 57, on June 25, 2006, and they have two daughters together: Sunday Rose, 16, and Faith Margaret, 13.
In the GQ interview, Kidman also addressed the viral GIF of her clapping at the 2017 Oscars, noting, “I’ve also seen the one where I’m clapping like that. Cause I had a massive heavy borrowed ring on and it was really painful, and I was scared of wrecking the jewelry. Ha! There’s always something behind the actual images that go out there, right?” The “Expats” star also expressed her amusement with the memes stemming from her AMC ad that plays in movie theaters, saying, “Yeah, yeah. ‘Heartbreak feels good in a place like this.’ But I’ll do anything for cinema, so you can meme me as much as you want.”
