Nigel Pearson, the ex-Leicester and Watford manager, has disclosed that he had to relearn how to walk over the past year following a recovery from a "neurological situation". The 61-year-old discussed his "frustration" with his health when he was spotted using crutches towards the end of his time at Bristol City in October 2023. He also shared an update on social media, expressing gratitude to those who supported him during his recovery.
"Relearning to walk has been an extraordinary challenge," he stated. "The support I've received from family, friends, colleagues, fans, and medical professionals has been deeply moving. I had a fantastic chance to travel to the US with my father to meet family for the first time in Wisconsin."
Pearson talked about his passion for the outdoors in an interview with the Guardian in February 2023 and has recently been able to return to the countryside. "I've been able to cycle in the Peak District and practice golf at the driving range, although my follow-through needs improvement (I haven't fallen over yet!)," he added. "While my prognosis remains uncertain, I believe that positivity and laughter can be the best medicine, as I discovered with old school friends on a canal narrowboat for my birthday. There's always light ahead—new opportunities, new challenges."
Pearson did not reveal whether he still harbors ambitions to continue his managerial career. He began his coaching journey at Carlisle in 1998 and has managed Southampton, Leicester, Watford, Derby, Bristol City, and OH Leuven in Belgium.
