There's no point in debating whether classic, top-down The Legend of Zelda games surpass Link's 3D escapades in Hyrule. Nintendo appears content to keep producing entries in both styles.
In an interview with BBC, Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma talked about the series' future following the release of The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. 'We will continue to develop dynamic 3D Zeldas (like Tears of the Kingdom),' Aonuma stated. 'But we also hope to keep making these 2D top-down Zeldas.'
Aonuma reached this conclusion after Echoes of Wisdom made him realize 'there's still a lot of potential for these top-down Zelda games.' Previously, he had wondered if top-down games could incorporate new elements. Clearly, they can, as Echoes of Wisdom doesn't feature Link because his sword 'got in the way.' This allowed Zelda to take center stage for the first time (excluding any CDi games).
Echoes of Wisdom also introduced other innovations. It marked the franchise's first female director, Tomomi Sano, and notably, Shigeru Miyamoto was not credited, a first for the mainline series.
For those unaware, Echoes of Wisdom can be completed in under an hour due to a glitch. For more details, read GameSpot's review of The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom.
