As the world eagerly anticipates the announcement of Nintendo's next home console, the company has been surprising fans with unexpected announcements. First, there was Alarmo—a Nintendo-themed alarm clock that wakes you up with sounds from Mario, Zelda, and Pikmin. Now, Nintendo has revealed a new game: Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition, a remastered version of the Wii U's action-RPG side-story, is coming to the Nintendo Switch on March 25.
Xenoblade Chronicles X is set in the vast open world of Mira, populated by humans and colossal monsters. Players create a custom character who joins BLADE, a human protection agency based in New Los Angeles. They combat Mira's dangers using large bipedal mechs known as Skells. The Definitive Edition features visual enhancements, additional story elements, and more. One intriguing new story element teased in the announcement trailer shows a mysterious hooded figure approaching the player on a beach, but the camera cuts away before revealing their face.
This release comes as a surprise to many Xenoblade fans, as Monolith Soft executive director Tetsuya Takahashi previously stated in an interview with USGamer that a lack of budget would prevent a remake due to the game's massive scale. Xenoblade Chronicles X originally launched on April 29, 2015, almost exactly ten years before this new Definitive Edition. GameSpot's 8/10 review praised it as a 'truly enormous game,' noting that even after 60 hours of gameplay, there are still new challenges to face.
Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition will be available exclusively on the Nintendo Switch on March 25 for $60. It is currently available for preorder on the Nintendo eShop and is also included in Nintendo's Game Voucher program.
